Award-winning directors Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper (Metamorphosis) combine immersive footage with first-person accounts from Indigenous Elders, first responders, and people facing a rapidly changing ecosystem in Incandescence.
As climate change drives bigger, more intense fires, Indigenous knowledge keepers show how controlled burns once regenerated the land. Fire, like a grizzly bear, can be destructive—but working with nature turns it into a force for growth and renewal.
Following seasonal rhythms, Incandescence explores fire’s patterns of destruction, aftermath, and rebirth. Many plants and animals have adapted to fire in their life cycles, and the film honours both human and non-human survivors, offering perspectives from bees to ospreys.
Through this cinematic journey, a resilient spirit emerges. Incandescence transforms fire from disaster into illumination, lighting the way toward renewal, hope, and a sustainable future. David McIlwraith of Fire Smart BC will be available during the Q&A session.
